About Lumber Calculator
LumberCalculator.net is a free, independent tool site with one driving question: how much lumber does this job really need? We answer it with board-foot formulas, framing math, siding coverage equations, and honest waste factors โ not with a single confident-sounding guess.

Why we built this
LumberCalculator.net began with a question that kept coming up at the lumber yard: how much board footage does this job actually need? Ask five sources and you get five answers โ the sales associate swears by a rule of thumb, the architect gave you a linear-foot count, a friend who built a deck last year has a story about overbuying by 30%, and the internet says something else entirely. Meanwhile, the consequences of guessing wrong are concrete: a half-empty pickup, a return trip that wastes half a day, or $400 worth of premium hardwood sitting in your garage waiting for a project that may never come.
The tools that existed tended to stop at the easiest number. Type a width and length, get a linear-foot total, done. But real lumber decisions start before that total and continue long after it: where does the paintable area come from when all you know is the wall's length? What is the difference between nominal and actual dimensions, and why does it matter for your board-foot volume? What is the formula for siding coverage, and how much waste should you actually budget? We built this site so those questions get answered in one pass, with the reasoning visible instead of hidden.
We are also deliberate about what this site is not. It is not a lead-generation funnel pretending to be a calculator, and it is not a lumber store dressing up product pages as advice. It is a focused reference tool: four calculation modes, maintained carefully, surrounded by guides that explain the formulas they produce. Everything runs free, in your browser, with no account โ because an estimator you have to register for is an estimator most people will never finish using.
What the site covers, in three layers
Everything here hangs off one core calculator, but the job has three distinct phases: working out the volume or count, turning it into boards and cost, and understanding the numbers well enough to adjust them on site.
The core math
Estimate
Four modes โ board feet, framing, trim pieces, and siding coverage โ each with industry-standard formulas. Board-foot tallies use nominal or actual dimensions per your supplier's quote; framing modes count studs, plates, and headers from wall lengths; coverage converts square-foot wall area into lineal feet of siding.
Run an estimate โFrom boards to checkout
Plan
Raw volume is not purchasable, so the planner rounds it up into whole boards โ a critical step you cannot do in your head. Waste factors account for header cuts, corner waste, and defect allowance; species presets reference board-foot pricing from regional lumber reports; and the cost total updates the moment you change any input.

Learn
A guide library organized in six categories โ board foot basics, framing math, siding & coverage, trim & moldings, wood species & pricing, and waste & efficiency โ that explains where the formulas come from and how to sanity-check them on your own materials.

The core equation is printed on the homepage and never changes: Board Feet = (Thickness ร Width ร Length in feet) รท 12. Everything else in the tool exists to feed that equation better inputs or to make its output actionable. Here is the chain, step by step.
| Wood species | Reference price | What it's used for |
|---|---|---|
| SPF (Spruce-Pine-Fir) | $3.50 / BF | Budget softwood framing lumber; the most common 2ร4 and 2ร6 stock across North America. |
| Douglas Fir | $4.20 / BF | Stiffer and denser than SPF; popular for beams, columns, and high-quality framing. |
| Red Cedar | $5.80 / BF | Naturally rot-resistant; decking, siding, and outdoor projects that live with the weather. |
| Red Oak | $7.50 / BF | Open-grain hardwood; furniture, flooring, and trim where appearance matters. |
| Hard Maple | $9.00 / BF | Close-grain, heavy-duty hardwood; butcher blocks, workbench tops, and high-traffic furniture. |
| Black Walnut | $14.00 / BF | Premium dark hardwood; heirloom furniture, gunstocks, and projects where every board matters. |
Inputs we sharpen for you
- Nominal vs actual dimensions โ toggle between PS 20-25 nominal sizes (2ร4 = 2โณ ร 4โณ) and dressed actual sizes (1.5โณ ร 3.5โณ) depending on how your supplier quotes.
- Framing stud counts โ wall length divided by on-center spacing (default 16โณ), plus 1 for the end stud, plus king and jack studs per door or window opening.
- Waste factor โ defaults to 10% for standard framing, rises to 15% for diagonal decking and fence pickets, and 20% for hardwood projects with grain matching.
A worked example you can verify
- 10 pieces of 2ร4 ร 8 ft, nominal dimensions.
- BF per board = (2 ร 4 ร 8) รท 12 = 5.333 BF.
- Total BF = 10 ร 5.333 = 53.33 BF.
- At $3.50/BF (SPF), the material cost is about $186.67.
- Add 10% waste โ order 11 boards, 58.67 BF, $205.33.
Metric mode mirrors the entire chain in millimeters, meters, and cubic meters, with species pricing convertible to per-cubic-meter rates.
Who it is for
A planning tool succeeds when it fits the person holding the tape measure. These are the four groups we design for โ the calculator serves all of them with the same formulas and the same honest math.
DIY homeowners
Building a deck, framing a shed, or installing new wall paneling on a weekend budget. You get the board feet, the board count, and the cost before you load the pickup โ and the reasoning to trust them.
Contractors & carpenters
Turnover schedules live on accurate material takeoffs. Fast framing-mode entry, metric and US units, and species-aware pricing make quoting and ordering quicker than a spreadsheet.
Woodworkers & hobbyists
Premium hardwood is expensive, and every board foot counts. The board-foot mode with actual-dimension toggles, grain-matching waste presets, and species-specific pricing protects your budget on every project.
Architects & designers
Preliminary estimates need defensible math. Share links carry the exact inputs โ area, species, waste, dimensions โ so clients and contractors see the same numbers, not a verbal estimate.
Where our numbers come from
A calculator earns trust by showing its receipts. These are the sources behind every formula, price point and assumption in the tool โ and the process that keeps them current.
American Softwood Lumber Standard (PS 20-25)
Nominal-to-actual dimension conversions used by the calculator (2ร4 โ 1.5" ร 3.5", 2ร6 โ 1.5" ร 5.5", and so on) follow PS 20-25, the standard every North American softwood mill adheres to.
National Association of Home Builders research
Framing stud spacing defaults to 16-inch on-center, the NAHB standard for residential construction. Header and jack stud counts per opening follow their published framing tables.
Regional lumber price reports
Board-foot reference prices (SPF, Douglas Fir, Cedar, Oak, Maple, Cherry, Walnut) are sourced from quarterly regional lumber reports across the US and Canada โ national averages that you adjust with your local quote.
Corrections from tradespeople and readers
Every formula and price figure carries an invitation: if you have a published source that disagrees, send it through the contact page. Several waste-factor defaults on this site have been sharpened that way by carpenters and lumber yard managers.
How we work
Five working rules that decide what ships on this site โ and what gets sent back for another pass.
- 01
Free, without a catch
Every tool is free with no account, no email wall and no trial. There is nothing to upgrade and nothing to cancel โ the calculator runs entirely in your browser, so there is also no project database to leak.
- 02
Show the formula
Board feet = (T ร W ร L) รท 12, Framing = wall length รท OC + 1, Siding LF = (area ร 12) รท exposed width. Every formula is printed on the page next to a worked example, so an estimate is auditable at a glance.
- 03
Round up, always
Lumber is sold in whole boards. The purchase plan rounds volume up into whole pieces, applies waste as additional boards (not a percentage tacked onto a decimal), and shows the leftover length explicitly โ not hidden in a rounded number.
- 04
Nominal or actual, your call
Softwood framing lumber is priced by nominal size; hardwood by actual dressed size. The calculator lets you switch between bases at any time, and the cost panel recalculates before your eyes.
- 05
Trade practice over marketing
Waste factors, stud spacing, and board-foot formulas follow how carpenters actually work โ not a lumber brand's newsletter. If a practice varies by region, we say so on the page and let you adjust.

What's next
The board-foot estimator stays the flagship, but the same engine โ honest formulas, whole-board rounding, species-aware pricing โ is being extended to the rest of a framing or woodworking project. Nothing ships until its math is verified against industry standards and real supplier practices.

Questions people ask about this site
Who is behind LumberCalculator.net?
A small team of carpenters, contractors and web builders who kept needing the same tool and never found one that showed its work. We maintain the calculator, write the guides, and read every correction that arrives through the contact page. There is no lumber brand, retail chain or affiliate network behind the site โ that independence is what lets the numbers stay honest.
How accurate are the estimates?
Accurate enough to buy from, if you treat them as planning figures. The math itself is exact; the variance comes from real lumber behaving differently than assumptions. We surface every assumption next to its result and remind you to verify prices with your local yard โ a calc you can audit beats a number you have to trust.
Why does the site cover guides if the calculator is the product?
Because a board-foot total without context is fragile. Knowing why nominal and actual dimensions differ, why stud spacing is 16 inches on center, and why waste factors change with cutting angle tells you when to override a default, when to add boards, and when a number deserves a second look. The guides make the calculator's outputs defensible instead of magical.
How often is the reference data reviewed?
Board-foot formulas are stable industry standards that do not change. Species pricing is reviewed quarterly against regional lumber reports and whenever a reader sends a published source that disagrees with a figure on the site. Waste-factor defaults get refreshed annually against trade practice surveys from NAHB and carpentry trade groups.
